Battery Management System

Registration closed!

What is it?

  • Batteries power our modern lives. From a simple decoration using LEDs to some complex vehicles operated purely by a Battery pack. Vehicles also include the batteries we send into space!
  • Battery management system is the core fundamental engineering aspect in any battery-operated system. From monitoring the cell condition, the battery pack parameters as a whole, BMS is the heart of an Electric Vehicle.

  • Course Content

  • Match terminology to a list of definitions
  • Identify major components of lithium-ion cell and their purpose
  • List the major functions provided by a battery-management system (BMS) and state their purpose
  • Understand how a BMS “measures and manages” current, temperature, and isolation and how it controls contactors
  • Identify electronic components that can provide protection and specify a minimum set of protections needed
  • Compute stored energy in a battery pack
  • List the manufacturing steps of different types of lithium-ion cells and possible failure modes
  • Prerequisites

  • Creation of a National Instruments and Mathworks account is recommended, it's free.
  • Some knowledge on arduino programming will be appreciated
  • Understand the working of basic electrical/electronic components
  • Basic concepts of chemistry - to understand/appreciate various battery technologies

  • Platform

       Simulation software - Multisim

       MatLab - online
